It’s a deep fear that many homeowners hold – waking up one morning to itchy bites that seemingly came from nowhere. There are only a few possible conclusions here, and the most likely one is also the first one you’ll probably come to; bed bugs. After that, your first question is likely to be, “How did this happen?”
Many people bring home bed bugs without realizing it. The Eden Advanced Pest Technologies team is here with helpful information on the causes of bed bug infestations – and steps you can take to prevent one from developing.
Where Do Bed Bugs Come From?
Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers that can easily grab onto clothing and luggage. They’re also hardy; ideally, they will eat a blood meal about once a week, but they can last for up to a year without eating anything at all. As you might guess, it can be difficult or impossible to starve them out!
Signs of Bed Bug Infestation
There are a few visual signs of bed bugs that you need to be on the lookout for. Aside from the bugs and bites themselves, you might notice small drops of blood on and around furniture infested by bed bugs. These might be bed bug feces, which are primarily made up of blood. Look for these droplets in furniture, bedding, and even clothing that you think might be infested.
How To Prevent Bed Bugs
The best way to keep from bringing bed bugs home is to thoroughly check your surroundings for signs of an infestation. Many infestations begin after a homeowner returns from traveling and unknowingly brings a few hitchhiking bugs along. There are several measures you can take to reduce your risk of bringing home unwelcome guests.
- Thoroughly inspect hotel rooms. Before getting settled in for the night, check hotel room mattresses, furniture, and carpeting for signs of bed bugs. If you find any, consider finding a different place to stay for the night.
- Keep luggage off the floor. If your lodgings offer a luggage rack, use it! Bed bugs can lurk in carpeting as well as furniture.
- Inspect any public-use furniture. Bed bugs aren’t limited to sleeping spaces! They are just as happy to hunker down in upholstered furniture as well.
- Wash clothes immediately after traveling. Once you return home, wash all the clothing you used right away – even if you’re sure your lodgings were clean. Use the highest heat setting they can handle to have the best chance of killing any bed bugs.
