Idaho Pests, Ranked From Most To Least Dangerous

Although Idaho is consistently ranked as an excellent place to live, that doesn’t mean that it’s free of pests and critters that could quickly ruin your day. Depending on where you live, you may encounter a wide variety of bugs and insects, as well as rodents and vermin that can be both harmful and destructive.

To help you stay well-informed and protected, we’ve decided to rank the pests most common to Idaho, from most to least dangerous. When considering the danger level, we’re looking at both personal safety (i.e., bites and stings), as well as other damage (i.e., destroying lawns or wood structures).

Spiders

Most people hate spiders for their creepy-crawly appearance, and Idaho is home to some dangerous varieties. The ones to watch out for the most include:

  • Black Widow
  • one of the deadliest species in the world.
  • Wolf Spider
  • despite its name, they aren’t as aggressive as you may think.
  • Hobo Spider
  • these large arachnids have a nasty bite, and they nest in a variety of outdoor spaces.

Wasps and Hornets

Getting stung is never a fun experience, and the flying insects of Idaho can pose a threat to you and your family if you’re not careful.

Paper Wasps

since these insects are territorial, you want to avoid getting too close to their nests. Yellow Jackets – with hives of hundreds of wasps, these bugs can be especially dangerous. Also, unlike bees, they can sting repeatedly.

Bed Bugs

Waking up with a line of bites on your body can be a nasty experience. Bed bugs are notoriously difficult to remove from your home, and they are super easy to spread. Unfortunately, Idaho has become one of the hundreds of places they’ve infested. What makes them even worse is knowing that they’re crawling over you at night.

Rodents

Whether it’s mice or rats, vermin can be dangerous for several reasons. First, they can contaminate every surface they touch. Second, they can leave tons of waste and excrement around, which breeds unhealthy conditions. Finally, they can damage your home’s structure when building their nests. Overall, though, rats are far worse than mice.

Carpenter Ants

Although these ants don’t eat wood, they do excavate to build burrows for their colony. Thus, an infestation that grows out of control can decimate your home’s structural integrity.

Ticks

Fortunately, you don’t have to worry about ticks breeding and taking over your home. However, finding one stuck to your body (or your pet’s body) can be harrowing, so just be sure to remove it properly so that the head doesn’t cause Lyme disease (or worse).

Roaches

No one likes seeing cockroaches in their home, but fortunately, they’re mostly harmless. They can spread germs and disease, but they’re also easy to manage. Usually, once you spot a roach, you can take care of them without too much hassle.

Clover Mites

These bugs are native to Idaho, and they can invade your home with a vengeance. While they are harmless, they can be annoying when you discover them in all parts of your house. Also, they can leave red marks on everything, including clothes and furniture.
