How to Identify Bed Bugs

The appearance of bed bugs changes depending on the stage of life they are in.

These pests can be difficult to identify if you aren’t sure what to look for, so we recommend familiarizing yourself with their characteristics.

Below is a description of bed bugs in each stage of life:

  • Eggs: Bed bug eggs are pearl-white and around the size of a pinhead. Once they reach about 5 days old, a dark eye spot will appear.
  • Young bed bugs (nymphs): Nymphs are small and either translucent or whitish-yellow, which can make them very hard to spot with the naked eye.
  • Adult bed bugs: After they’ve had time to grow and feed, the appearance of adult bed bugs changes drastically. They are often approximately the size of an apple seed and are either round or oval-shaped, depending on how recently they’ve fed. They also take on a red or rusty brown color.

Where Do Bed Bugs Hide?

Bed bugs tend to hide in:

  • Mattresses
  • Headboards
  • Curtains
  • Upholstered couches and chairs
  • Picture frames
  • Outlets
  • And other hard-to-reach areas

If you find bugs that meet the above descriptions anywhere in your home, call Eden right away. Our team is skilled in locating and treating bed bugs, no matter the stage of life they’re in.
