Beetles are among the most diverse insect groups, and many species find their way indoors, especially during warmer months. Carpet beetles feed on fabrics, furniture, and clothing, while pantry beetles target stored foods like grains and cereals.

While they are not typically dangerous, some species can trigger allergic reactions in humans or pets, and contaminated food may pose a health risk. They can be difficult to spot early on, but small holes in fabric, larvae in dry goods, or shed skins are clear signs of activity.

Boxelder bugs and clover mites are outdoor pests that often move indoors with seasonal changes. Boxelder bugs usually invade homes in the fall, seeking warmth and shelter for winter. While they don’t cause structural damage, large numbers can trigger allergic reactions in some people and pets, and their stains can be difficult to clean.

Clover mites are tiny red pests that appear in both spring and fall, often near sunny windows. They leave small red smears when crushed and, although they don’t bite or spread disease, their presence can irritate sensitive skin or cause mild allergic reactions. Sealing cracks, fixing window screens, and trimming vegetation near the foundation can help keep them outside.

Earwigs and millipedes are moisture-loving pests that often appear in bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms, especially during spring rains. Earwigs are easy to spot because of their pincers, which they use for defense. While they rarely bite, earwigs can pinch small pets or humans if handled, causing minor irritation. They hide in damp, dark areas by day and come out at night to feed on decaying plant matter and small insects.

Millipedes, though generally harmless, can enter homes in large numbers after heavy spring or summer rains. Some species can secrete fluids that may irritate the skin of humans or pets. They curl into a spiral when disturbed and usually die quickly indoors due to dry air.

Few household pests are more irritating than flies buzzing around the kitchen, especially in late spring and summer when warm weather speeds up their breeding. Fruit flies and gnats multiply quickly in overripe produce, drains, or trash cans, while houseflies can spread bacteria from contaminated surfaces.

Beyond being a nuisance, these pests can pose health risks to humans and pets by contaminating food and surfaces with harmful germs.

Silverfish are fast-moving insects that thrive in dark, damp environments like basements, bathrooms, and attics, and they are especially active during the humid summer months. They are easily recognized by their silvery, fish-like appearance and wiggling motion. These pests feed on starchy materials such as paper, glue, and textiles, putting books, wallpaper, and stored clothing at risk.

Reducing humidity is key to controlling silverfish, particularly in warm, damp seasons. If an infestation occurs, professional treatment may be needed to fully eliminate these persistent pests.

Pantry pests such as weevils, grain beetles, and Indian meal moths are common in kitchens and pantries, and they are especially active during the warmer months when indoor temperatures rise. They infest cereals, flour, rice, and other dry goods, often entering through already infested packages. Once inside, they reproduce quickly and can contaminate large amounts of food.

Preventing these pests is easier with seasonal vigilance. If you notice signs of pantry pests, discard affected items, clean shelves thoroughly, and consider calling a pest control expert to inspect and treat the area.
